Anger

01/23/03

Question:
I was at the Prayer breakfast this morning, and I thought of a question after we were done. You told us NOT to push anger down and leave it unresolved. Well, that's about the way I deal with things, unless they're super serious. How do I fix it? I mean, how do I get rid of all the things I have stuffed down inside of me? P.S. I'm 14 (freshman in high school), and I go to a Baptist church. I believe in the plan of salvation, and I want to live my life for God! (I didn't know if that would help with your answer of not!! ) :-)

Comment:
This must have been one of the young people who attended the Iowa Prayer breakfast I spoke at in April. What a great group of young people, I got to share with them after the main breakfast ceremony, and it was truly a pleasure!

So young friend, how do you get rid of the anger you've piled up inside? It's not as complicated as you might believe. The most important thing for you to do is to acknowledge the anger you've stuffed down. If you never acknowledge you have anger, then you can never get rid of it. So you're already a long way down the road to recovery. The next thing you can do, which I believe is critical, is to begin searching for the positives that have come from your hurt or anger. God promises us that he will turn any trial we experience into something positive (James 1:2). So you need to claim that victory over the pain and allow God to use it in a way that will only make you better. Sometimes we allow the anger to eat away at us because we believe it is only bad, but it doesn't have to be that way. Whatever you go through in life can be used by God to be something incredibly positive for you. God doesn't cause the bad things in our life to happen, that is a product of a sinful and fallen world, but God does turn those negative experiences in to positive ones!

Peace,
Michael
