In the Midst of Tragedy

01/09/03

Turning toward the people you love

Why is it that tragedy turns us toward the people we love the most? Why does it take something catastrophic to make us realize how important our wives, husbands, children, parents, siblings, close friends are to us?

In talking with our clinical director about the recent events in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C., we both realized how families all across America were reaching out to one another, just to hold each other. For some, it may have been years since they even talked—and now—in the midst of tragedy they are together again.

At the Smalley Relationship Center, we encourage all of you to simply find your loved ones, no matter how long it's been, and simply hold them. Remember what it means to be family, what it means to be loved and loving.

None of the victims of this terrorist act knew it was going to be their last day. None of us know what will be our last day either. So why miss the opportunity to let the people closest to us know how much we love and care for them.

Peace,
Michael Smalley
